GTI Cylinder Head on Driver block
« on: 20 January 2008, 17:44 »
Hey all,

I'm looking to become the owner of a MK2 Golf Driver (1600 carb). The idea being it's going to be an uber low budget track tool/fun machine. One thing I was interested in doing is fitting the clinder head from either a SOHC or DOHC Gti engine of a similar era to the car. Will either head go on the block without major drama? I wanted to avoid going down a full engine conversion route, hoping to stay with an uprated head, a pair of 40's and a decent exhaust. Any help for a Golf newbie would be appreciated!

Only the 8v SOHC heads will fit :)
The 16v DOHC head will fit too, but the compression ends up totally wrong so pistons need swapping etc etc, not worth the bother.

MK2 GTI 8v head is a good upgrade, bigger ports and a better cam profile really livens them up.  Make a new 6degree BTDC mark on your flywheel and time it up to that, the 18degree BTDC mark will be no good for the GTI cam.  If you havent already get a haynes mnaual, the procedure is listed there it involves measuring a set ammount and making a new mark with tipex.  I used a chunk of ruller with string wrapped round it, so i didnt drop it down the gearbox

While you're there fit the complete GTI 8v exhaust system including the manifold and downpipe (the later stle with 6 bolt joint), I did that on my old driver and it made a massive difference :)

Only thing with the GTI head is you have the injector holes, you could leave the injectors in or remove the injector inserts and drop pennys down the holes and refit the inserts.  I've heard gearbox drain/fill plugs fit too though?  Also the driver head has a coolant channel hole for the inlet manifold and carb, but since you're going for dual carbs this isnt required.

where can i find more info on the 6degree BTDC. where about in the haynes manual is it as i couldn't find it? i have read other posts about fitting a  gti head which haven't mentioned this. does this just allow more performance from the gti cam?

look up replacing the flywheel, and you'll find this:

The reason you do it isn't to do with the head as such, its to do with the GTI cam.  Since the cam is more aggressive it needs more ignition advance to get the best out of it.  Ideally you need to replace the distributor with one from a K-Jet GTI, as the advance curve will be better suited to the GTI cam as well.
