Right ive got a mk2 16v. pictured below, i'm looking at dropping a 2l bottom in it some time later in the year. An audi one has come up near me for £75 (bottom only). Is this a good price, ive been told it runs fine. Are there any tell tale signs to look out for if its knackered? + do i need any think else of the audi???  Other that swapping the sumps over i beleive its pretty much the same. And the gains are pretty good for the money you have to spend?

The only real way to see if an engine's any good is to see it running.

I'd approach anything else with extreme caution.
Just because you're offended doesn't make you right.

Audi 6A lump is a good one. You need to swap sump and oil pump when using this block. Can't see getting one much cheaper than that in a hurry.

I was considering a 2.0l bottom end for mine but I had a long think and thought i'd be safer rebuilding my own. The cost of a rebuild compared to gettin another block isn't much different if you know the right people. I would hate to buy a bottom end, fit it, use for it for a few hundred miles and then the the thing go boom. As i'm re-building mine I will know exactly what condition its in and know it should affectively be a 0 mile engine, peace of mind to the max :) But thats only me, others may disagree.

  • Hello, my name is John and I'm a dub addict.
Thats a great price for a bottom end, get a spanner on it and make sure it spins over smoothly, and check the bores for a lip near the top.  a slight lip is ok but a big lip suggests you may have to have them honed and new rings fitted.  Having said that though, 2.0 bottom ends are generally bomb proof :)
