Gear linkage for GTI 90 spec

I've just had the ball replaced at the bottom so it doesn't fall but the car is still clunking through the gears and I have difficulty getting into 5th.

yes it will but you also need to change the bushes  http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=51321.0
get one of these and also get the gearlinkage repair kit. available from gscp's

Done the gear linkage repair kit that holds the ball at the base of the stick all ready which has helped, but is there more to it than that?  I will order some of these bushes to see if this helps as well.
