1.3 carb problems!

right thanks guys for the help i'll see if the hot air flap is working fully and if not i might have to rty the 'VW mod' to see how it fairs. does carb icing only occur in cold weather though? Iknow that the uk winter isn't far off arctic at the best of times but i thought it only happened when it was really cold? sorry for all the questions but i know you guys love showing off the knowledge really (or is it just lack of mine )

For me it happened in the damp most. When it was really really cold it didnt seem to do it too much! But, it used to do it in the summer if i drove on dual carriageways or similar, ie with lots of cool air flowing through, once i stopped and let it warm through again it was fine.

Cool, humid air causes the worst problems although carb icing is unlikly to be a problem in the summer months.

i only get it in the freezing cold winter mornings. Now its spring i havent had it even thought its rained alot! I got a weber btw

yeah i've just checked the hot air flap (by sucking on it) it opens but it takes some doing. i think i might try a small screw to wedge it slightly open. i checked it then took it up the dual carrigeway to get it up to temperture and the problem seemed to be gone? but i doubt it!!! i'll see how it fares in the next few weeks and report back  thanks for all the help

Instead of bodging it up, why not take the intake pipe off and use some penetrating fluid to get the flap moving easily again...?!

i suppose is it not meant to be stiff then because it felt like it was held by a stiff spring? also i'm in the process of finding a weber but which one do i need to get is it the 32 DMTR? i found a thread with this info:

the 32/34 DMTL for the 1.6 will not fit the 1.3 as 1.6 and 1.8 engines use a 32/34 DMTL carb and 1.3 engines use a 32DMTR carb, though for the 1.6 carb to work with a 1.8 engine it will need rejetting.

it says it replaces the 2e3 but i'm sure my pierburg has only got 2e written on the side? any clarificatio on this? its a 1990 on a G plate aswell.

yeah all the golf pierburg carbs say 2e but yours is definately a 2E3 carb. yep, your right, a 32DMTR is the right carb to replace the 2E3.
actually i think GSF do the replacement webber kit!and theyre cheap from them!
