Heater Issues......continued.
« on: 30 March 2008, 18:09 »
Thought I'd start a new thread as my issue seems to be a little more confusing than 1st thought. I have an 89 8v Digi and when I bought it realised it wasnt getting up to normal running temperature as it should. Bought a new thermostat and when changing noticed a bit of leaking around the water pump so got a new one of these too and changed it while I was at it. That did the job and since then had no probs with it running too cool. However, since then been having problems with the heater. The car will run up to half way on the temp guage and generally 96 on oil temp MFA. Sits here nicely for a bit but then the temp needle will drift slightly over half and the oil temp will rise to around 102. When it does this, the lovely hot air I'm getting will go completely cold for a while. After this while the needle will drop a little below half and oil temp will cool a little and the heat will return. After trawling the forum and posing a couple of questions I thought I'd found my answer - Heater pressure valves. Got myself a genuine vw set from GSF and fitted them today. Disappointingly though, still have the same issue. I have bled the cooling system as per rubjonny's fool proof guide a couple of times before and after fitting the valves. Bit lost as to what I should try next so any help and advice would be very much appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Heater matrix might be foobared and leaking letting in the air!
Did you place your thermostate in some hot water before it went in to actually see it open fully?

No, didn't test it beforehand - amateur mistake eh? I think its opening though because when bleeding the system the bottom rad pipe will heat up after its been running for a bit. Did notice the other day when bleeding that it came up to normal running temperature and the lower rad pipe was cold again. Mentioned to a friend and he didnt think it was much too worry about. As for the matrix, it doesn't seem to be using much water so don't think its leaking???  Thanks for your reply btw

take your radiator out and give it a real good flush....garanteed brown sludge in it.

Same sludge could be in your matrix also with lots of air.

my radiator blew yesterday because of this.

Flush the matrix out with a hose and re connect the pipes...now bleed the system again
:)

Thanks Mr Blue - certainly worth a go I guess.

Just going back to the thermostat thing - should it open and close while the engine is running at normal temperature or should it stay open until the engine cools again?
