LHD golf gti....
« on: 26 March 2008, 08:29 »
a slight variation on a whats it worth type thread..

As is always the case, as soon as you make a bit of a committment, something comes along and unhinges it all. So i've got a brand spanker new gti, lhd... dsg. 17inch wheels. climate control, cruise control....  probably in general a kind of middle of the road spec.

due to work, i might be coming back to the uk... so im picturing the scenario that by the time i get everything wrapped up here. The car will be less than a yr old, probably have 10k miles on it. I'll get it shipped back for free with the rest of my belongings. I paid around 12 grand for the car and will owe around 9 on it by the time i come to leave.

So option 1. pay it off and bring it with me. essentially getting a 1yr old LHD gti back in the country for 9k + any costs to convert it. registar it.

option 2. Sell it. for pretty much what i owe on it and come back to the uk car free.

any thoughts on either. problems i can imagine are the security and insurance side of things. I'd have to have a cat1 alarm jobby fitted. headlights changed or just adjusted... and resale.

thanks

Karl

LHD in the uk will be a killer unless you're just on the motorways, which you probably won't be.  I've no idea how much it would cost to convert, but a better option if you've got free shipping back to the UK could be to sell on the continent.  You'll then be able to make a little profit on it even after import duties, I'd imagine.  That'll probably be a bit too much hassle though, so I'd sell here if I were you.  It would get lapped up in no time from Spinney's, Park and Shop and Choitrams noticeboards etc...

Personally I'd sell it, too much hassle to bring over and wouldn't want to be stuck with lhd in the UK.

If they're prepared to ship the car over wouldn't they be prepared to give you something towards a new car over here?

They just give me an allowance for a 40ft container. and i'd just be squeezing my car in amongst the rest of my stuff..

so a mixed set of opinions. very valid points about the mcdonalds drive through... that might be the one that seals the golf's fate.
