Mk 2 Golf GL Auto
« on: 11 March 2008, 15:29 »
I sold my old Mk2 just before Christmas and I really miss it. Bit tatty but mechanically very good indeed. I only bought it as a stopgap (never had a Mk2 till then, had 2 Mk1s many years ago and a couple of Passats) but I was so taken with it I kept it for a few months.

I was slightly wary at first because of the 3-speed auto box, I thought it would be gutless to drive but I have to say, the 1.8 carb engine suits the relaxed style of the auto very well. I've always thought that if you design a car's engine well enough, with a good spread of torque, then you don't need that many gears.

Anyone else here owned or driven one of these?

I have driven an Audi 80 1.8 carb auto which I think is most probably the same gear box. I liked it and was going to buy the car off a friend until the head gasket went. Surprisingly smooth for a car of its age with a 3 speed auto box
