Bypass valve + engine polishing
« on: 10 March 2008, 00:24 »
Hi all, couple of questions!

Firstly, my heater isn't blowing out hot air! Been told it's more than likely the heater bypass valve so I'm going to replace it - I found it on Euro Car Parts but just wondering if anyone knows is the Dealers still sell these?

Secondly, to get the car ready for the shows, I'm going to start polishing bits of the engine bay up. Bought the bits and bobs (polishing kit, dremel kit, sandpaper, etc.) so just waiting for them to arrive. Anyone fancy listing things I can singley remove from the engine bay and polish up?

Going to start with the alternator :) (ps. it's a 1.8 carb)

Cheers!

Alternator, rocker cover, cam belt cover, engine mount bracket, starter motor, radiator cowling, rad fan motor. Just have a look under the bonnet and see what is made of metal

Did my valve (with the help of black 90 - cheers dave) got it from GSF for £30ish plus some antifreeze. I did call a vw specialist to ask of they could get one and they told me to use some copper pipe and ditch the valve altogether! not the best idea as this could f@ck the matrix. cant remember the part number but they did have one in stock - in manchester anyway!

The risk is that with the higher pressure you'll burst the matrix.  Swap it out to a Golf3 unit and you can safely lose the valves.
Just because you're offended doesn't make you right.

mine never had any bypass valves fitted

I don't think a semi will give the same results

I'll just order one from GSF then :) Wish we had a GSF in Newcastle or something!

Was after just replacing the radiator cowl as it's got alotof surface rust and looks messy, but Euro Car Parts sell them but have none in stock so it looked like I'm going to have to paint it myself :( Do i need any special paint because it's in the engine bay or is black hammerite fine?

I'm a complete noob to painting so would I rub it all down, spray a layer of primer, then a layer of black hammerite?

i think you can just sand it down and spray the hammerite straight on, without primer.
