Mk1 1600 head trouble

Hi there,

I have just got my first golf and have had a bit of a bad time with it. After having the car for 2 days the gearbox mainshaft oilseel burst and coated the clutch with oil, i replaced the clutch and aquired an 1800 gearbox which i also installed.

All was well for a couple of days and then the timing belt jumped, i'am now getting a zero compression reading when testing no1 cylinder. I think it's safe to say the valves are gone.

So the question is when installing the new head do i line the 0 mark on the fly wheel up with the center of the hole in the bellhousing, along with the mark on the cam pulley lined up with the valve cover and the dizzy at no1. Is it ok for the crank pulley to move a slight amount when tensioning the belt.

I'am looking to keep the 1.6 lump but would like to tune it, any ideas.And finally does anyone know where i can get glide pins for the 1.6 gti break calipers.

Any help would be much apprerciated

Hi mate, welcome to the forum.

Thats bad luck you've had there.........guess things can only get better :-X

What happened to your old gearbox? Just because the mainshaft seal went shouldn't write it off.......easily repaired, or did you drive it with no oil?

Sounds like you have the timing marks all sussed out, however when you say 'is it ok for the crank pulley to move slightly', how much is slightly? More than half a tooth? Are you going in the correct direction with the tensioner? Usually you can get it pretty much spot on. There is also another mark you can use for the crank, although the fly wheel alignment is fine, you can double check with the pulley at the timing belt end........there should be a 'notch' that will align with an arrow on the timing belt cover.
