Instrument Lights
« on: 24 February 2008, 11:14 »
The instrument lights on my 1989 golf mk2 1600 cl are broken. These are the lights which illuminate the speedo & other instruments. Does any one know how to put in new bulbs & how many are there? I had a go myself and managed to get the dadhboard front off and speedo cluster half out but couldnt see any obvious bulb holders, access was very tight. All info welcome.

u have to take the whole unit out from the dash, well i did nayway, once u got all the front of the dash off ther are two screws holding the cluster in...
once u have undone them u can pull unit forward, unclip the speedo cable from back of unit, tight access, then at bottom of cluster will be one or two connections to unclip, depending on what fuse box u have....accss is easier if u drop the tray off from below the steering wheel...
that should all be disconnected now so pull clusterout, turn it over and on the back u will see 3(i think) screw in ights, simply unscrew and replace

Just done a similar job this w/e to put the speedo cable back on. You have to remove the radio, heater knobs, and some of the switches to get to the screws. It a fiddle but not too tricky.

I think I only saw two lights and they are at the top of the instrument panel so you may be able to do it without taking the instrument cluster out completely. Just undo the two screws and tilt the thing towards you. Quarter turn to undo. Haynes suggests you take the steering wheel off but it can be done without. Do take neg lead off battery though.

Doublesided tape on the screws to put them back in stops you loosing them inside the dashboard forever.

Now, can anyone suggest why my indicators keep blowing their fuse?

right - before you go any further - do you NUMBER PLATE LIGHTS WORK ????????

I lost all my dash / heater / switch lights etc

There switch was fine - so i ripped the dash apart - gave up - refitted it , then noticed the number plate lights were out

changed that fuse and Bingo - Dash lights again
