Vibration - 2750-3500rpm all gears? Hmm
« on: 16 February 2008, 18:20 »
Hello to all owners of German GTi's, don't hate me but my love lies with the French derivatives (a 1.6 205 to be precise) but I've taken posession of one of your autobahn storming Golfs.

Anyway, I have just rescued a white 1994 8v GTi from a farm. It's only done 63k and had 11 months MOT on it, the owner was starting to use it as farm transport, so I've spent an entire day hoovering, steam cleaning and scrubbing it. Starting to look fairly well and goes very sweetly. A well put together vehicle and dare I say it - more predictable than a Pug.

However, on the test drive the weather was foul (bad fog) so I didn't have the opportunity to open it up. Am now starting to notice a metallic vibration between 2750 and 3250/3500 rpm in all gears. Was wondering if anyone had any thoughts as to a possible cause. I've a few culprits lurking in my mind but I'm not yet tuned to the german wavelength yet so would appeal for any pointers from more knowledgeable folks.

Many thanks - Mark.

Could be the exhaust down pipe heat shield rusty and rattleing as a result, I had it happen on mine and a big jubilee clip cured the problem

First of all,  i already hate you liking a french car!  but you rescued a golf :D so your in my good books!!

Seriously though i would start inspecting your exhaust sytem, it wont be anything serious,  just little niggle,  heat shields to tend to rust way and rattle on the GTI so will prabably be the answer to your problem :)
10 golfs and counting!

Excellent, that was one of my thoughts. Thanks for your input.
I will have the car up on hydraulic ramps on Wednesday so should have a good poke about and see if I can't go about fixing that rattle. I'm also interested to note if the dreaded 'tin worm' has taken up residence in any of the underneath regions, as it appears he's already helped himself to a bit of both doors!

How much galvanising did vw do? Or have I just been unlucky?

There's a picture in one the Golf plus mags that explains how much of the car was done but it was more the body of the car as oppose to all the panels that were treated, I'll have a look for it
