Advice on Fitting Big Bumpers
« on: 20 February 2008, 09:37 »
Just read this article http://www.matey-matey.com/big_bumper_conversion.shtml

At the bottom it says that the front bumper brackets have something to do with supporting the engine

I havent herd about this before :undecided: Will it cause me problems when trying to fit them if i dont have anything to support the engine?

Cheers for any advice on fitting them!

Yeah, the front subframe is held on with 6 bolts - and the front engine mount is bolted to the front subframe.

4 (17mm) bolts for the front subframe are from the bumper irons > subframe > chassis
2 (13mm) bolts for the subframe are for the subframe > chassis

By removing the main 4 bolts, your putting a lot of strain on the remaining two bolts - easiest thing to do is just stick a jack with a block of wood under the g/box and jack it up until you see it bear the weight of the engine. Then skooch under the car, and undo the 17mm bolts - you can spot them through the round holes in the chassis leg area. The bumper then just pulls forward, make sure you unhook the indicators before pulling it completely out.

those 2 smaller bolts are more than capable of supporting the engine, but don't drive like that as this will put additional force on the bolts which could cause them to snap.
