Hi everyone, been looking for a tdi for months and finally found one 270 miles away in Chichester! Well worth the train fare down, bought it and drove back same day. It's a 150 gti dti ( bit of a mouth full Bishop!).I'll post some pic's some time. What a car, was going to chip it but not sure if it's worth the bother, it's bloody quick anyway.
   I've read all about the cam problems on this site and others and it seems to me that the problems only arise from cars when the wrong oil has been used.Right oil,no problem.Wrong oil BIG problem. Can somebody who knows for def let me know, rather than a wild guess. Cheers .
     Also, been thinking about  cruise control(£75 from one website)for the motorways in France this year.Is it just a quick fit and plug in,or does something need altering on the computer.

firstly welcome to the forum!

even if you use the right oil there is still a chance that your cam could go, but if you use the wrong oil then its a much bigger chance.

the oil comes down to the service setting you're on.

for fixed (ever 10K) its 5w40

if you're on variable its 5w30

personally i use  Castrol Edge Turbo Diesel 5W40

Peace of mind - right oil for VW diesel fixed servicing cars This product should not be used in PD models equipped for VW Longlife extended service intervals (indicated by the letters QG1 on the VIN plate - see handbook for details) as Castrol Edge 5W-40 contains the specifications for these vehicles.

its not the cheapest but its peace of mind.

regarding cruise, you can do it your self, but you'll need a lead to talk to the computer

I got mine fitted by a specialist think it was £115 including the parts

Thanks, it's got the code for longlife but I'd still be happier servicing every 10k or 12 months. The cruise seems a bit more complicated than I'd hoped, not having the necessary hard/software.For £50 fit and setup I'd rather someone else bugger about with it. I take it the cam wear is noticed as a gradual lack of power rather than a sudden blowup? Any idea of the cost of a replacement and fitting etc?
