I would go for a post 2001 model, comes with the AUM lump (KO3s turbo) can be mapped to hold more bost that the AGU/ARZ lumps - if you want big power and are going to be changin turbo's etc go for the older ones as they come with a big port head.
Will always love my mk4 but she had to go...225 Quattro TT in its place....but its still black (she lives on in spirit!)

I think in standard guise, the AUQ 180 bhp (2002>) is the one to go for - Also comes with a 6 speed box - Whether that's a good thing, though, is down to personal opinion!
Current Car:- 2014 GTI PP manual, white.

Make way for..... 'The Silver Bullet'! 227 bhp, KO3-S'd AGU, R-TECH Spec 2 map 8), Forge 007P, Blueflame Turbo-back, Eibach -30mm's, YellowStuff front/RedStuff rear pads, Goodridge braided lines, TT Short-shifter, R32 Dogbone, TT W/B bushes, Forge TIP, G60 fly/VR6 clutch, 5.5 ltr washer bottle,

6 speed box is the nuts, saves petrol on the motorway!

I agree with Ivor. Only golf's ive driven are a 1.6  :undecided: and my beloved anni which I have atm. I can only imagine one difference between the Anni and the 150bhp golf, and that's the performance as standard. Definitely great fun to drive though and looks the mutts!!

thanks for the info !!!

hopefully i will have a 4k budget to spend in summer on a car.

so far it looks like its going to be a mk4 18t 150

others cars i have seen in this price range are

minty MK3 vr6 (tbh first option...)
ratty but fast 2.0t skylines
and..... audi 1.8t a3 (think the mk4 golf is better ? ) :nerd:
few leons
mk4 Tdi

if i do get a mk4 it would have to be black 3door  18s /40mm drop and a dam good remap

still noted look out for a AUM lump
