was the GTi hard done by?
« on: 24 January 2008, 14:15 »
basically, what I mean is..... I was driving to parcel force just now, and I see a 1.4 golf mk4 in black, the same as mine at the lights, now, all I could see from looking, and this may be my ignorance here, was the wheels and the badge on the boot was different. apart from that, if he had my alloys and my gti badge, id never know if he drove past me whilst I was walking along with my dogs.
for a eg: normal focus, focus st or focus rs, totaly different looking, same with many other cars.. my question is, why did VW feel the need to make all there cars look the same, yet the price tag doesnt justify the difference?
yeah i had a mk3 as well for a while.  the gti was sh!te though. so slow !

from what I can see yes. they did the bit that needed to be done for a bigger engine, and then just stopped and went on a tea break.
infact, are the seats different, they look the same, just trimmed with recaro in the middle.

From my 1.4 compared to woodys old gti there are a few differences that add up in the grand scheme of things; bodycoloured bumpers, suspension, wheels, spoiler and obviously the badge on the back.

Inside there are few differences, seats are completely different as they hug you whereas the ones currently in my car dont and look sh!t in comparison, the streering wheel is different, dash comes with a trip computer (which I got now), some with cruise control, the centre console is almost the same unless you have Climate control and the (imo) crap wood effect, there are headrests in the rear bench, and the gti's come with speakers in the rear pods as standard I believe whereas my 1.4 didnt.

When you actually look at the two next to each other and then sit in one and then sit in the other you can tell the difference.
Will always love my mk4 but she had to go...225 Quattro TT in its place....but its still black (she lives on in spirit!)

You are comparing fords top model to its bottom model by compareing the focus rs to the bog standard focus. if you compare the R32 to the 1.4, they look totally different.

the focus st has similar looks to the normal focus. its the same car with a spoiler, bodykit, 17" rims and sports suspension. The golf gti is the same as the 1.4 golf but with similar upgrades.

Under the diferent bumpers and side skirts, basically, they are the same vehicle.

Totally agree - If you see a Mk4 GTI on its own it doesn't look that different. Put one next to boggo Mk4 and all the subtle changes really add up.

Physical on the outside the GTi has colour coded bumpers, rear GTi light cluster, GTi "badge", alloys and it will sit lower (hardly noticable).

Other than they will look the same (imo thats not too bad, what else you want !?). As Outlaw said tho, you get much more else where in the GTi.

Being a 2.0l owner I kind of like the fact that no one else can really tell my car is actually really slow
