New Clutch?
« on: 17 January 2008, 21:10 »
My clutch is high, in fact it feels as if it “locks” at the top of the pedal, its been like this for the past 15k, getting higher so I think its on it way out. It isn’t slipping as of yet, so I’ve not really looked in to changing it yet. 2nd sometimes feels a bit jumpy, but that may just be my driving.

I’ve seen a few people saying that the flywheel may also need changing, how do you know if your flywheel needs changing at the same time as the clutch?

Also, is it just the clutch plate you change or other parts too?

Can anyone recommend a decent place to purchase a clutch (set)??

Thanks

Does your dash also judder when you pull off in 1st?

The flywheels on the Mk4's seem to have near enough the same lifespan as the clutches.  The OE clutch is a 'dual mass' item which is a bit more expensive than the usual single mass jobbies found on most cars.  A few people opt for the VW VR6/G60 combo which turns out to be a lot cheaper than the Mk4 item.

What sort of mileage are people changing clutches at.....?

Reason I ask is that my standard 1.8t (150bhp) is now on 102,000 and is still on the original clutch, exhaust and front discs (hope i have not jinxed everything now!)

It is a lot of motorway miles, but still - i dont exactly drive it like miss daisy is in the back. (but neither am i a, thrash the living daylights of it at every opportunity type of person).  I drive it with some enthusiasm and definatley drive with a smile on my face a lot of the time

Thanks for your reply mate,

It doesn't judder at all in first, it is very smooth, sometimes 2nd is a bit lumpy, nothing major though,

I've been quoted at a Seat dealer £384 for a new clutch kit fitted, but they said they wont know about the flywheel until they strip it down, this is why i'm asking for signs.

I've done a test where you try and set off in 3rd bringing the clutch up slow, if it doesn't stall then the flywheel is fine, mine stalled, so i'm hoping its ok.

The price of the flywheel is £490 alone.

I'm on 85k miles, I dont drive hard.

I'm just unsure

I thought that was the test for the clutch being ok.

My understanding was set off in high gear with high revs (not insanely high) if the engine stalls then the clutch is ok because it gripped as it should thus stalling the engine.

if im wrong someone please correct me with an explanation of how this points to the flywheel.

is that a fitted quote for the flywheel?? I've sure i've seen a few people been quoted around £250 for supply only  :undecided:

tricky dilemma you're in really; i'd say just leave it until the clutch starts to go; chances are the flywheel is ok  :undecided:

also haven't you just been remapped?? i'd say there is little point in fitting another standard clutch as you could well be replacing that much sooner than you think.

have a read of this thread but be warned the price is steep!!  think the total setup was £900 fitted!! mind you £100 was fitting plus the bloke had a new slave and master cylinder so by my calculations the flywheel is about £250....

Hi mate,

No that price is for a clutch kit and bearing at a Seat dealership without a flywheel. I’m hoping my flywheel is fine as I just cannot afford nearly £1000 yet,

Yes, I’ve just been remapped, but I requested a mild map, I don’t drive hard and mainly wanted the extra power on the motorway which I’ve now got, the power starts around 2.6k ish and most of the time around town I don’t change that high, so I think a standard clutch would be fine?

What are you planning in terms of clutch and upgrades as you’ve just also been re-mapped?

Are there any signs that the flywheel may be on its way out?

I’ve had the high ish peddle for the last 15k or so, it isn’t slipping as yet though

I seen it in another thread mate, the guy said if it doesn't stall the flywheel is faulty... I'm not slipping yet, but may to start in the next few weeks.
