This may be a very stupid question but how do I work out if my MK2 Golf GTI is an 8 valve or 16 valve? It was sold to me as an 8 valve but the car is so fast I don't quite believe it...

If it says DOHC 16v on the top, its a 16v.
if the engne looks rectangular and a bit pants, its an 8v.

Darn and blast...8v...ah well it's only got 85 on the clock, full service history, no rust and i swapped it for a merc 190

if its 8v its still 120bhp / tonne which is indeed quite fast.
