1.6 driver vs. mk3 8v GTI?

General question really about speed of mk3 8v gti's ?

Pulled up at a set of traffic lights which lead to a dual carriage way, mk3 8v gti pulled up next to me, starts revving the nuts of his engine, thought f**k it, any way lights turn amber and we both pulled away ... he was lagging behind by quite a bit until about 70/80 and then I got owned 

I would have thought that the gti would have beaten me hands down? or was he just a sh!t driver?   

I was thinking of buying an 8v gti mk3 for my next car but this kinda put me off as their 0-60 speed seemed really slow?

Well on paper, it gets to 60 in about 10 seconds. So if your Driver has had a few mods, or he's a pants driver.. you probably had a good chance

webber carb an tuned engine ... surely that wouldnt put down a gti?
