Setting cam belt tension....

Right, after putting a new cam belt on my 16v gti, section 2D-2 of the Haynes manual says to adjust the tension, you need to use VW tool 210 to between 13 and 14 on the scale.

So for those who don't have that tool, what does that equate to in the real world of deflection in mm?

Or will I just have to bite the bullet and go buy the tool?  :rolleyes:

I think its a 45 degree twist of the belt between the top cam pulley to the bottom, on the side where there is no tensioner.

Its what i did on mine and it seems fine. Other forums say the same if you go to:

i thought it was 90degree turn on the the longest length of the belt? thats what i did and its fine. on my 8v though

its 90 degree on 8v, 45 degree on 16v ;)

Got the engine running yesterday afternoon, cheers guys!
Now all I have to do is sort the gear selector rod out - I totally f**ked that up and now it hits first instead of reverse. 'course, I only found out when trying to take it off the ramps!  :laugh:
