Engine Swap.
« on: 17 March 2004, 09:07 »

I've got the chance of getting a 16v engine from a
D reg gti for next to nothing.
The engine runs and everything and is apparently tweeked.
I've got a 1990 8v Gti, would it be a fairly staight forward swap? What other bits would I need from the Dreg golf, ECU, Gearbox ???
My dad owns a garage that restores Triumphs, so i've got access to all the gear to do the swap as soon as. But I wanted to check with some of you Golf experts before I crack on.
Any info would be greatfully recieved.
  Cheers

If you do decide to do this, take your time. Dont rush one out and the other in. Make sure you replace all the easy things.. Like Oil Filter, Cambelt, etc. Clean the engine bay etc. It is a very long and tedious job but done correctly and you will reap the benefits.

I'm not sure but I think the 16v engine is only different because of the head. Could be wrong, tho if its true you wont have as much hassle, i.e removing crank shafts etc.

All I can say is good luck really... and be patient.

Is that all I'll need Gambit? What about the ECU? What injection system would that car have?

You need the ECU from the 16 valver, contains all the engine mapping info, wont run with the 8v ecu. also remeber the 16v engine is not as torque-ee so you need to rev harder for not much more performance, is it worth it? take the 1.8T route..
Dizzie, I see youve gone down the 1.8t road, thats what i want to do, got any tips, etc?
cheers
