Mk4 Gti Turbo aircon querie

Ive just been offered a 1999 Golf Gti turbo in good condition but... when the aircon is engaged it cuts out and if the engine is idling the engine dies. The owners been told its the pump as there are no issues otherwise. Hes managed to get hold of another pump aswell.
Is it likely to be this?
if so how easy is it to fit?

Also is there anything else to look out for as im new to golfs.

Looking at this from another angle, it might a load issue on the alternator, you could try turning on loads of other electrics, main beam etc. and see if you can re-create the fault.

Just an idea.

cheers, hes stated that the aircon when switched on doesnt engage but does kill the engine so you might be right. How would i check if the pumps broke or as hes said it might be the clutch on the pump. If it is the pump and it hasnt been used for some time is there anything else that would need replacing. Is it a DIY job apart from the regassing?.
