Intense Fuel Consumption
« on: 10 November 2007, 15:35 »
Mt GTi T seems to be consuming petrol at an alarming rate, on long haul drives shes fine (motorways and stuff) But in town driving is killing my wallet! I have been extra light on the pedals but cant seem to increase my mpg above the 20-25mpg region. Is there anything that i can do to help the mpg?

On my way home from getting the Induction kit fitted i was averaging 16mpg for a fair while until i got on the motorway but still didnt get above 27! Between a quarter and a third of a tank to get from Northampton to Cov n back - about 70-80miles!

So it seems the GTI is hard on other peoples wallets not just mine phew  but i did notice something strange the other day. I have been running the car on optimax for a couple of weeks hoping for a cleaner engine and all...but wasnt happy with the price per litre or the consumption, so i changed back to standard fuel and the car seems to have taken to it amazingly, not only do i get more litres to my pound but the consumption is way down and the mpg's are up on the trip computer. I'm slightly confuzzled as isnt it meant to be the other way round with these fuels lol

I find that as well!!  And I'll take that a step further by saying that I find my 1.8T feels a bit more responsive on regular than she does on optimax etc.  In fairness they were (at least the 150's were) set up for 95 RON.  Optimax and the like does keep the internals clean I suppose but I don't buy the performance / MPG benefits.

Remapped T's on the other had are set up for the 98RON stuff (as are the 180 bhp's??) and do seriously benefit from it.

fuel wise i always get tesco super unleaded which is 98 or 99 ron, i cant remember exactly.  I get more miles out of it than with regular petrol but cos it tosts more its probably a case of swings and roundabouts.
