OK folks. Cheers for that. Off with the bypass valves then!
Will try the scrappy before forking out for new hoses. Will Mk3 ones be any good or will I have to look for a Mk2 without the valves (if indeed there is such a thing?)

Golf GTI: good enough as it is

yes you can get mk2 ones without the valves as this is what i bought off ebay, B2B components (username tierod69). I got the whole kit (every rubber water hose) for about £38.

here it is: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/VW-GOLF-MK2-GTI-8V-RADIATOR-HOSE-SET-C200_W0QQitemZ200202201465QQihZ010QQcategoryZ9889QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

These guys are spot on aswell, VERY helpful and genuine.

edit: just noticed these are for later mk2 8v GTIs... if yours if different, contact them... as I say they are very helpful.
