16v temperature guage and light
« on: 25 October 2007, 13:16 »
Hi guys,

My temperature gauge isn't working I've had a look at what I think is the temperature sensor in the radiator which is all connected up correctly. There are cables going to the fan and cables going to the wiring loam (I guess these go to the dash) the fan switches on when the engine needs it so I pressume the temperature sensor is fine.

So I have had a look in the hand book and it says that when you turn the ignition on the water light should flash twice which it doesn't do!!

Anyone have any ideas what the problem might be? My initial thought was that the gauge on the dash is no good but why would the light not flash as well?

If it is the temperature gauge itself is it possible to buy a second set of clocks swap the temperature gauges over?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks
Edd

There are three temp sender on the side of the cylinder head (near the distributor). I think the yellow and red wire is for the temp gauge on the dash. Try moving it to any of the other three temp senders (they are all the same) to see if its a faulty sender - just disconnect the others and re-attach the dash wire.

If you search the Mk2 section for "Temp Sender" you'll get loads of help from people who are more specific than I've been!

had a similar problem on my 8v. the temp needle got to a stage where it did not move at all. nicked a temp sensor from another GTI at the local scrappy and it all works fine now :)

(the temp sensor on an 8v digi is just in front of the engine block, not sure about a 16v!)

I don't think a semi will give the same results

Good bit of advice cheers!!

Tried swaping the wires on the sender on the cylinder heads turns out one of them is dead so I'll have to buy another, about £25 from VW.

Its turns out that one of the wires helps control the idle so when you undo it the engine stalls. After a bit of playing about it looks like  you need the yellow and red wire connected to one sender and the blue and white connected to another sender for the temperature gauge to work.

Thanks for the help.
