mk3 engine 2L 8V help
« on: 23 October 2007, 10:55 »
arite peeps, i got a problem i need help with. last night i jumped in my car to go training, turned the key, it started then promptly cut out (as usual) this is the norm so i left it a sec and tried again, this time the engine kind of turned a little bit then stopped made a funny noise, then i heared a pop and loud bubbling/gushing noise. got out to find all the oil from the engine flowing down the street in a james bond, 'you aint catching me' slick stylee. so now im riding high on the 'i hate dubs' wagon (again), as everyone ive had has been a nightmare!!!! it looks like all the oil has come from around the filter?? is it possible that the crank case pressure got so high it blew a hole in the filter?

any help appreciated, my dub love is hanging by a thread lol

ps its a mk3 gti 96 N AGG 2L 8V

pps also the oil light started flickering on and off on saturday at idle, there was oil in it so i put it down to a dodgy sensor.

Clean up the mess and see if you can find exactly where the oil came from. This will help diagnosis greatly.

Well theres something that doesn’t happen every day lol.

Was the engine running when it did it or just turning over on the starter?  My initial thought is what happened to me on and old Peugeot, the big end bearing gave in and slammed the rod right through the engine block, which in turn dumped all the oil out the hole. but... that rarely happens without plenty of knocks ad bangs long before...  And generally doesn’t smash the block unless it’s at higher revs.  That’s just a thought, worth checking.

You could have burst an oil pipe, but it’s unusually, so like you said, a large pressure build up could have blown a pipe/filter and caused this to happen. Its not something I have ever known to happen, certainly never had ay cars in the garage which have had this happen,  but do keep us up dated and I’m sure we will find the cause!  Hopefully a simple fix and nothing to nasty!

10 golfs and counting!

well, heres the latest, i got out the spanners and had a shuffty earlier. donned the trusty latex gloves and got in with the dirt. first port of call, a good look around the block and sump for signs of escaping rods, cranks etc, but all was well. then i grabbed the oil filter, to find that it twisted off with no resistance atall, and with the fresh splashing of oil over it this seems to be the cause of the above fluid evacuation.so im thinking it must have worked its way loose since having my coilovers fitted due to the increased vibration maby?.i took all the oil cooler off and crank breather gear off and gave it a clean, some new gaskets and a new filter and oil now and im hoping this will solve the problem.

the engine was turning over when the initial pop happened, then ran as normal for about 10 seconds untill i could here the spitting and glugging, then i shut it off and stepped out into the black lagoon. the pressure build up with the car running for that short ammount of time was enough to pump the lot out past the seal on the filter.

im keeping my fingers crossed

its possible the seal on the filter wasnt seated correctly and with the colder weather (hence thicker oil when cold) its blown the seal??
