it may be worth cleaning out the throttle body to see if it helps. i had this problem a while ago and i was lucky in that i cleaned this out and it sorted out the problem!!!!

I just so happen to have the haynes manual close by and the page you want is 4B5 right hand column 'Engine Speed Sensor' in bold. Though thats for the simos engine so don't know if your R-plate is the same.

Search round see if you've got an independant VW specialist or a good local garage. :smiley:

You're a diamond! Didn't know it was called that! Found one with 3 years warranty for 39.60 plus VAT.
If I replace all the common bits now, I reckon I could save a few years of annoying faults :undecided:
