iratic idling

I have an h reg 8v which at tick over will never will never sit in the same place. It used to idle at about 9000 rpm but now it ranges anywhere from 10000 to 150000.  If i rev it up it up or ease my foot off the clutch to biting point it will go back down and idle correctly, but if i drive on as soon as i come to a stop it  will be reving too high again. I dont know if ive explained myself very well, anyone got any idea's what could be causing this, ive had a new clutch fitted recently and i cant remember having a problem with the revs before that. Cheers for any help.

You driving a Mk2 F1 car or something?  :grin:

Do a seach for 'hunting idle' and 'idle problems'. You'll find lots of info on things to check.  :smiley:

So yours doesn't go that high then??  Something must be wrong with it then fifth. Try changing the rotor arm, it might free up the remaining one hundred and forty three thousand RPM.

why not be helpful?

replace the blue temp sensor perhaps?

if not then give the ISV a blast through with some carb cleaner?

after that then give it a good tune up as per rubjohhnys guide in the maintenence section of the mk2 board on here.

after that, suspect ECU? plug in another one and see if that makes a difference?

if not, then buy a new car. or a new engine and start from scratch.

check the idle switch clicks 1st, free fix :)
also check wiring to throttle body.  if it dont click, make sure throttle cable aint too tight, should hitr stop firmly.  If that checks out, idle switch is underneath the throttle body,. loosen the 2 mounting screws and move it inwards till it clicks.
