Potential new owner
« on: 08 October 2007, 15:07 »
Hi all

just wanted to introduce myself.  I'm currently considering purchasing a Mk4 Golf GTTDi to replace my pride and joy Accord Type-R and Pug 406HDi (hate it).  I commute 400 miles a week, which was costing me over £100 in V-Power in the Type-R, so I bought the 406 to use for work. It bores me silly, looks crap, drives crap, but returns 700 miles to a tank. I don't get much chance to use the Type-R, so I've decided the sensible thing to do is try and consolidate the two into a 'sporty', nice-looking diseasel.  I think the Golf fits the bill.

So, I've been trawling Autotrader and Pistonheads for a few weeks now trying to find the perfect car.  I quite like the look of the Anniversary, but they seem to command quite a high-price.  I don't mind paying, as I'll probably (hopefully) be keeping the car for a few years. I am a 'fettler' by nature, but if I got an Anniversary i'd be quite happy keeping it standard (bar a remap of course). I've done a few bits to the Accord, decent audio and in-car TFT custom mounted to look OEM (took me ages).

So yeah, I'll hopefully be on here a lot soon, contributing as well as leeching

Any pointers anyone can give will be appreciated. I'll have a read through the sticky's too. :)

Here's my beast :(

have a look on the buyers guide in the Mk4 maintenance + info.[urlhttp://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=38557.0][/url]

service history is a must and the cambelt needs doing every 60k. if it has been serviced by the owner check its had the right oil.

good luck

Cheers! Been reading most of the stuff today, seems quite straightforward.  When you say "right oil", do you mean correct rating? Or is there a certain brand that you recommend?

yeah the PD engine are very fussy about what they have so you have to give them the right stuff.

you can get the GT TDI 150 PD in non anniversary (what i have) these will go for a few grand les than the anniversary and whilst you don't get the body kit and 18"'s you'll get a better spec options wise, as you could do much on the annis.

personally i wouldn't re-map an anniversary just because its an anniversary and should be left untouched

Thanks for the advice. What options are available on the normal GTi that wouldn't be on an anniversary?  There's a nice one on Autotrader but the guy isn't answering his phone. He also has no mention of his location

if its a land line you can get the area from the area code

AFAIK the only options on the anniversaries were cruise, parking sensors and sat nav.

with the GT TDI 150 you could have all the options the anni had as well as xenons, leather / leather recaros, front arm rest, auto dimming rear view mirror, raintronic, winter pack, heated seats, and an extra 2 doors

the only things you couldn't have as a factory option are the anniversary bits like the rims, the body kit, the gear knob etc (all of this is available from places like vagparts.co.uk)

don't get me wrong the anniversary is a very nice car, just you'll get more more option wise for your money with a GT TDI 150 PD, and pretty much everything extra the anniversary had can be added aftermarket eg the S3 / VRS / TT / Leon etc brakes
