tappets and cam shaft...
« on: 06 October 2007, 18:06 »
afternoon...

right then, just changed the tappets on my gti 8v. got a couple of qustions...

firstly, there are 5 cups which hold the camshaft in place correct? the bits that press the camshaft down onto the tappets... mine only has 4.. looks like one has been machined out, does this just mean its been lightned?

secondly, the camshaft has some flat spots on it on a couple of the excentric bits... this is due to wear and not down to it being a race cam correct?

thirdly, the tappets not sound mega loud, but is this just them bedding in? should i take it easy with them for a while?

about it for questions...

rob

i have been told the tappets will be a bit tappy to start, but saying that it should disapeer with a few revs pretty quickly.. you did soak them in oil upside down over night i hope?

did my cam the other day, and you should have 4 caps and they should be fitted back in the correct order (there numbered)

as for the tappets you should of soaked them as said, and the noise should dissapear when the engine increases oil pressure

hydro tappet heads have only 4 cam caps, one is replaced by an extra oil squirter.  solid lifter heads have 5 cam caps :)
