Exhaust recomendations
« on: 02 October 2007, 19:53 »
Hi

I've just bought an 87 8V GTI which needs a little work, but the most immediate thing I'd like to change is the rather loud exhaust. I took it into Kwickfit as I though  just a back box might do. They said it has a full Janspeed system, so a standard back box won't fit. This is getting corroded, and will need changing so what are your recommendations, not to loud or chavy. Thanks.

Heard good things about milltek, but at a price.

People also say jetex systems are quite quiet, but Mew's one was pretty loud and quite poppy really.
Have you thought about a genuine VW longlife system?

Hang on, are you asking for opinions on a complete new system or a new backbox? I would guess only a Janspeed bb would fit if a standard box won't!

Everyone I've spoken to seem to regard Scorpion as a bit loud...but the one I've got on mine isn't too bad

If you're looking at upgrading your whole system, my personal preference would be a milltek system, although as already said, they come at a price. All aftermarket systems are louder than standard, especially with non resonated, big bore pipes, which are more about noise than efficient performance. Milltek (and Jetex) systems have a resonated option, which means that there is little extra space in the pipe when the gases are slowing though for the system to resonate, echo and boom.

If you want a cheaper set up, go for a full VW system, which will be quiet, and will give standard performance. However, it sounds like in your situation you just want to change the backbox, which I would do with a replacement Janspeed one. Janspeed are a reputable firm, and again, I've heard there exhausts aren't incredibly loud when you don't want them to be either.

Hope that helps!

Hi

Thanks for the advice. I'll look into a replacement Janspeed BB, and the VW long life. Kwikfit wanted £180 for a full replacement. I wonder if the Janspeed is kankered as it seems even louder then the exhaust on my other car which is an Evo with a straight 3" setup, as you can imagen thats not quiet! Any more suggestions welcome. oh and I'll be asking about brake pads and shocks next if the search doesn't throw up any answers.
