Gearbox Problem

Hi there all,
Wondering if anyone can help.
Im about to purchase a golf convertible 2.0 16v (mk4 head), but been told the gearbox needs replacing,
does anyone know if the vr6 gearboxes or the 8v ones fit in the 16v block?? Its just that gives me more choice to look as looking for a 16v gearbox is never easy, Thank you.
Your help is much appreciated.

There's usually plenty of stuff on Ebay, and the Seat & Skoda 16v (VAG) boxes may fit aswell, but don't quote me on that.

I think the 16v gearing is slightly longer, so more top end speed.
