stem seal issues!!!!!

i'm halfway through (well 1/8th of the way!!!!) changing my stem seals and just had a quick question. In the haynes manual it says and shows 5 parts that hold the cam in place, however in mine there are only 4. Just thought it was a bit weird, almost looks as tho one of the supports isnt there.  Anyway the question is which will be the best way to tighten the cam back down once the jobs been done? I think the book says 5,3,1 and then 2 and 4. Its looks like i dont have a number 4. confused (doesnt take much i know!)

Hi, do it in an outwards direction, so number the caps one to four and then number the bolts on the manifold side odd, the others even, start with bolt/nut no.4 then follow 5,3,6,1,8,2,7, that should ensure its even pulling down, theres prob a guide somewhere else, but hope that helps.

haha yeh ive just been rebuliding a head and thought exactly the same thing, wheres no.4 bearing cap ?!? glad i dnt need to post this now, saved me the trouble lol nice one!

well job done now, timing is all to cock as i marked the intermediate shaft instead of the crank pulley (what a dick!). It runs but stalls after a min or so when left to idle. Think i'll have another crack tommorrow and try and get it closer. i dont have a timing gun so its gonna be a lot of guess work!!!! I think i've ballsed up the buckets tho, its gotta a real noisy tappety kinda noise now, have only run it for five mins tho.  I can put up with a bit of noise, just so long as it stops belching out oil!!!!   Just gotta get enough cash for a 1.8 turbo now!

well the plot thickens some what.........  got the timing a bit better this morning and went for a spin. Still blowing oil when you back off from high revs and then flatten it, balls.     Got a bit of a rattle from the top end now, not sure if its coz its pinking a bit or if somethings come loose. Getting a bit fed up now! At least the tappets have gone quiet now. Cant understand why its still burning oil though...............

Try a dry and then wet compression test to check the rings are O.K

well, found the timing was out a couple of teeth. Took it out for a spin earlier and it's spot on now!!!!!!!!!      So relieved now, was starting to get proper annoyed!!!
