Crap heating in 16v mk2
« on: 23 February 2004, 17:21 »
My heating is very poor in my mk2 16v. The engine gets up to temperature fine but even with the heater fan on the third setting it doesn't blow out much hot air. The fan is also noisy!! Has anyone out there had the same problem and can tell me what the problem is?

Cheers

there may be air or dirt in the matrics...... also your fan may be worn......

undo the 2 pipes running to your heater matrics preferbily where the by pass valve is the thing which stops the matrics from blowing....... disconect both pipes in the engine bay and connect the inlet to the matrics to a hose and rinse through..... and your should see clear water coming out of the other pipe..... once youve done and dirt etc has come out reconect the pipes and try that.......... do this when the engines cold.....to both avoid scalding and cold water damage........

I had this problem, the golfs were recalled in the mid nineties cos the heater matrix was liable to leak and burn people's feet..... they fitted a bypass valve on the heater pipes going into the bulkhead. you need to replace it. quite cheap and takes five minutes with a screwdriver.

I like many others had this same problem, I replaced the bypass valve & it didn't make any difference >:(

Try doing as vwsystems suggested, flush & reverse flush the matrix & see whether that improves the heat, I did this after replacing the bypass valve & it did improve things slightly!
I think I may have a blocked matrix (possibly some kind of rad weld type stuff  ??? but I'm going to leave it until the weather improves).
