Auto Headlight Advice
« on: 24 June 2007, 14:29 »
I seem to be having trouble with the auto light setting on the GTi.   When the lights are OFF, they are actually ON - when the lights are on auto and it's not that dark, the lights are ON - and only when switched to side lights do the headlights go off?  Any suggestions?  Do I need to change the set up onboard somehow?

All help appreciated.

Regards,
Glynn

Sounds like your car was destined for Sweden
If they're ON in the OFF position then it sounds like a job for your dealer...

Have the same issue with my car too,  its usual in bright sunlight to realise the headlights are on, and then when its getting dull, and they should come on they don't.
Had exactly the same problem on my previous MK 5 GT TDI, and the stealers didn't have a clue, their only test was to drive it in the workshop, see the lights come on and say all was well!.
The auto system on my 5 series beamer works spot on, never too early never too late, seems VAG need to go the same supplier as BM.
So my tip is simple, don't bother with the auto setting, and do it the old fashioned way by turning them on and off by the switch.

Is your car an import ?

Sounds like it is set for Euro running lights and you need to visit a VW dealer to have the lighting system reset for the UK.

If it is an import, I have heard that some supplying companies/brokers will arrange/pay for the work to be done.

You do realise that they come on over a certain speed  even in daylight and don't go off untill you slow down.   I noticed mine were on on a sunny day on the motorway (in Germany) so looked this up in the book.  I remember having a quick blast when entering the motorway but must have gone 40 or so miles at 70ish before I realised they were on.

funny...mine has started doing the same this afternoon, after working fine since delivery in March

Started the car in bright sunlight, and the lights came on, and stayed on when the switch was on auto setting. Still the same after a hour or two, so am a bit puzzled

I've checked that all fuses in the fuseboxes are correctly located, and will keep an eye on it tomorrow...dealer visit otherwise

Make sure the windscreen area where the light and rain sensor is spotlessly clean, and free from any silicone sealants such as Rain-X.
