How do I remove the mk4 gearknob?

Just bought a new gaiter and dont have a clue how to get the gearknob off?? dont want to brake it because it will be going back on..

the gaiter is just clipped on, a small flat head screwdriver underneath will lift it up; the gearknob itself is then held on by a plastic circlip i believe. release this and the gearknob should slide off.

not sure if the gaiter is attached to the gearknob itself

hmmm i know most people who have removed the gearstick have ended up breaking the clip
