Help ..horrible noise
« on: 16 August 2007, 18:28 »

We have an early MK2 1985 which has covered 99k ...3000 of them miles in France in the last month and I am getting a horrible clicking noise from the back of the engine,it must be something to do with the clutch because when I dis_engage the clutch the noise disappears.and the noise also disappears once you get above 25-35 mph.

Cheers for any help.

Stu.

Nice looking car!
Does the noise get louder when you turn? If so, then you could have a CV joint giving up. The reason why it goes quiet when you engage the clutch is because you are taking the load off the gearbox, and thus the drive shafts.
May be your clutch release bearing, but this would normally grind when you engaged the clutch.
Also, check the oil level in your gearbox. If it is low, then that may have caused an internal problem in the gearbox.

That sounds like it,I too don't think its the clutch bearing as there is no bearing grinding or whining we did have a new lefthand CV joint fitted and the mechanic did say (VW Golf Owner himself) the drivers side may need replacing .Before everyone jumps in and says there you go then I have never heard the noise of a failed CV joint or that dis_engaging the clutch would stop the noise.

I will investigate in the next few days....Bloody good website .

It would not necessarily stop the noise, but certainly make it quieter, almost inaudable, unless you are in a turn. The noise would be an irregular heavy clicking sound.
