Mk2 Sumps
« on: 09 August 2007, 09:11 »
Think my 16v sump has a little hole in the side and am looking for a replacement.

Was the same block used in the 1.6 Mk2 golf as the 1.8 engine - just to know what I could use when I tour the scappies!!!

Cheers.

yep pretty much any big block VW engine sump from 85-95 will do, 1.6, 1.8, 2.0, MK2, MK3, Passat etc.  The really early ones are a bit shallower, and some of the really late cars got aluminium sumps!

Just make sure you can crack off the drain plug before you start removing the sump, and to get to the bolts between the engine block & gearbox remove the small metal tin plate, should be held to the gearbox with 2-3 bolts.  This only applies to later cars,m before 86ish the plate was all one piece!

they dont rust, but they also dont have any give, if you bottom out its more likly to just crack, whereas the metal sump will bend quite a bit.
