Mk2 16v - no fuel to injectors
« on: 13 July 2007, 01:54 »
Fuel pump relay - OK
Thermotime switch - OK
Cold start valve - OK and spraying fuel on starter
No fuel to injectors!!

Removed all injectors from cylinder head.
I undid the union on the metering head that goes to the WUV a little and plenty of pressure!!!
Undid an injector then lifted the airflow by hand - fuel came out of the injector line on each manual lift with no engine cranking.
Cranked the engine with the airflow lifted and nothing came out of either the 3 injectors nor the fuel line with the injector removed.
Bypassed the fuel relay so the pump was constantly running - would have expected fuel to come out of the line with the injector removed. Just a little drip.

Tried a different metering head - no difference.

Am I right in thinking that if the fuel pump is constantly running, the airflow lifted enough to expose enough of the fuel slots, that fuel should come gushing out of the line with the injector removed? Or should I carry on working backwards to the fuel pump/tank?

Its the fact that the cold start valve is correctly spraying fuel which is throwing me.

The only thing I can think of now is the WUV. How does the metering device distribute fuel? What I'm saying is, does the fuel enter the distributor from the fuel pump pipe then go down to the WUV before returning to the distributor then feeding all 4 injector lines i.e. could there be a complete blockage in either of the fuel lines to/from the WUV or the WUV itself?

Like I say, I'm inclined to eliminate the fuel pump end because the cold start valve seems to operate correctly. I really dont want to start taking the metering device to bits either!

Does anyone know of a correct procedure to isolate why fuel does not come out of the injectors?

Cheers guys.....

I don't know valvers, but if its a k-jet then if the top of the air box leaks then pump won't dispense!  Good luck anyway.

Replaced in-tank pump. The old one seems to still work but has a slightly different tone of hum to it.

Tried for fuel at injectors. Still nothing.

Filled tank with 5 gallon of fuel. Lo and behold, fuel at injectors!!

Fired up eventually and seemed fine.

The fuel gauge was in the red before adding the 5 gallon. I'm amazed this appears to have been the root of the problem. I've driven gti's right through the red before now without any issues.

Will check system & control pressure just to be sure and shim up if necessary.....

Thanks guys.

Would've done fuel pressure but.....

Decided to check overrun cutoff valve. Disconnected it, tipped it upside down and covered my jeans in oil!!!

This thing was full to the brim with oil. Worse than that, there was probably more fumes coming out of the crankcase ventilation hose than the exhaust pipe. Even more confusing, did a compression test and all 4 cylinders show 12 bar. Not bad for 155k miles.

Additionally, when the car is hot and idling the oil light flickers on the dash. No buzzers though.....

The dipstick looks fine, the filler cap contains only oil, it looks as if oil is getting to the cams as you can see the splashes. The only thing I've spotted is very light remnants of oil in the expansion bottle.

Reportedly, the car seems to lose water and the warning light flashes every couple of weeks but I'm sure I can see steam coming off the radiator every now and again.....

Blue smoke occasionally comes out of exhaust pipe and spark plugs are black.....

Me thinks new head gasket would be a good option. Certainly stem seals. I don't get the fumes from the crankcase ventilation though as I'm getting 12bar compression. I thought it was only worn rings that caused these fumes so if compression is good how do so many fumes get into the crankcase? What symptoms would you expect with too much oil in the engine?

Anyway, head is coming off so questions should be answered. Anyone looking to sell on a head gasket set & decent valves??
