ABF + KR?

Anyone know if it's possible to use an ABF bottom end with a KR head instead of going the 9A route?  Any problems besides the ABF block being taller than the 9A?

works just as well apart from the height issue, you might as well use the complete ABF engine including the head and simply bolt on all the KR management, the ABF head & cams is just as good as the KR one :)

It was because I've been offered a ABF bottom end for £45 and i'm struggling to find a decent cheap 9A or 6A.  How hard is it to convert the ABF to k-jet, and can I use my existing KR loom?

exactly the same as using a 9a on k-jet, just plug/bolt all your old stuff straight in/on :)
I should really have told you it was impossible and bought the ABF instead  :grin:

haha, would have been worth a try  :wink:  I know of a few people running full ABF engine's on k-jet, but wasnt sure if you could mix/match the heads and blocks.  What sort of power would i be looking at from the ABF bottom end then, around 150bhp and a bit more torque?  Not too bothered, but seeing as all my 1.8 KR bottom ends are dying or dead already it'd be nice to get a little gain on top.  How much taller is the block by the way, and how do you get around it?

Well std would be 150, but thats with an 'economical' fuel map plus the cat, and VW tend to be conservative with their power ratings! You could see 160-170 without much effort :)
Not sure exactly how much taller it is, but chances are if you use the std manifold/downpipe you'll be just fine! If not you can just make a spacer to fit between the manifold & downpipe.

4 branches can be a problem depending on the make, the phirm can re-work the rear engine mount bracket to give you enough clearance.  I've heard using the MK3 subframe/mount/bracket will drop the engine, but dont quote me on that one!

Right, well i'll just plug it in and use all my KR parts and see what happens.  Will fueling etc need fiddling with or should it be ok?  Hmm, can't think of anything else i need to ask, any problems you're aware of that you could let me in on  :wink: :drool:
