Odd noise on GTI?
« on: 30 June 2007, 22:17 »
Dont know if anyone else has noticed this.......or is it just my GTI?

Turn the engine on, out of gear, then put clutch down and the engine seems to run a little bit smoother. Does anyone else's do this? I know lots of people have commented on the "tappit" noise, but this is different. Its like it gets abit quieter and smoother. Worried cos my dad reckons its maybe a sign theres a problem with the clutch, but its only done 2500 miles!

Does any one else's do this?

cheers

Mark

Should run quieter and maybe smoother. All you are doing by depressing the clutch is isolating the drive link to the gearbox. Shouldn't be a problem - tell your dad he's paranoid

Get dealer to check if you are worried but this sounds perfectly normal.

It's unlikely to be the clutch if it's noisier at idle.

Maybe there is a problem with the gearbox.
Any noise from the input shaft bearing goes away when the clutch is depressed.

Or maybe you are paranoid.
But I don't notice any difference in sound when my clutch is depressed.

Cheers guys

the old man drove it and he noticed it. Then he told me to try. Its one of those things that you dont notice until someone else does. I did say to him that they do make cars differently than they did in the 1920's LOL

I have noticed on all the VW 6speed manual boxed cars i have driven that they are far more noisy than the 5speed ones.

from new mine has had a little 'clunck' sound when I let clutch out in neutral..you only really hear it if your listening for it...29k miles on it's not got any worse...presumed it was normal.
