The Mk2 16v is a fine car, and if you have a later one, you won't even be that short of modern conveniences.

The mk3 vr6 will be quicker than the Mk2 16v but not by a huge amount because the Mk3 is heavier.
I had a Mk3 16v and a Mk2 16v and in terms of performance, there's not a great deal in it, the Mk2 does feel more raw and slightly nippier round the bends, but then it's a little lighter and the Mk3 was known for softer suspension. the mk3 interior is more comfortable and modern, but it's all up to personal taste.

If you want to stick with the Mk2, but want more power for a better 0-60, spend some cash on some engine mods. How about a performance Cam, or twin weber carbs? Lightened fly wheel, or perhaps lose weight from the entire car ? Better exhaust or a short shift gear changer or even a gearbox with different ratios to improve the 0-60 ?

It's all personal really, do you have the money for a new car or serious mods? Are you a real Mk2 enthusiast or do you like the Mk3 or Corrado more? Do you want the modern creature comforts or is it all about speed/performance/handling ? Are you mechanically minded enough to do the mods yourself?

at the moment i have an 8v gti gerbox, a 4branch, full stainless the bigger inlet manifold and a giant sponge, i would really like a lightned flywheel, ive been on the look ot for a while. ive thought about cams but they seem very expensive and i dont have much money and if i don find some itl cost to have them put in, so i might leave it alone

cheers for your input  *heads to ebay again*

You have to remember what they are selling for too - Mk3 prices are dropping through the floor, where as you can't get a decent mk2 for cheap now - they're all going up in price.

When buying a car I always take into account how much I am going to lose if I sell it after a year or so.

I'd stick with your mk2 to be honest - I drive a mk3 VR6, which is my second in a row (the first was written off). I have just bought a mk2 to put the VR6 engine into, as I prefer mk2's by far! Mk3's are boring compared to mk2's, and they feel twice as heavy when you're in them.

tough choices, id prob keep the mk 2, but thats just coz i hate letting stuff go haha, but heres one for u which u prob wont believe, i have a mk 3 gti (as a run about) i also have a suzuki swift gti 16v with too many mods to mention, even has the audi door handles, transporter wing vents, mental paint, huge rims. mad ass engine (no turbo yet), its running at 152 bhp at the moment, and was built by VW god dave at B AUTO's Leeds. he has done sh!t loads of mag cover cars in the past,  i raced dave, he was in a mk 2 with a 200bhp vr6 in it, we were neck and neck all the way from one set of traffic lights to the next, which was about 100 meters, we both had 1 passenger in too so it was a fair race, not bad to say he had the 2.9 lump and i had a 1.3!!!!!!!!!!!  i aint fussed who believes what, this actually happened and if anyone knows dave, they need to ask him coz he was very shocked by it

Can u not turbo the 16v unit?, that would kick ass then

im getting the turbo for my swift gti i mentioned in my last post, ill have around 200 BHP by the time iv done, that car makes my mk 3 gti 8v feel so slooow, but i didnt get the golf for the speed, just as a nice run about which it certainly is

good luck with your plans anyhow
