1.8 HEAD ON TO THE 1.6

Hi all,

This is my first post on here so be gentle!!!! The car actualy in question belongs to my lil sister, she has a 1992 1.6 driver and has her 'mod it' head on.  I saw a car on ebay the other day that had the 1.6 block and 1.8 8v head, is this modification simple?  All the headgaskets i've seen state for the 1.6 or 1.8 so assume it will be a direct bolt on.  What about the manifolds and everything else?  We aquired a Weber DC0E 40 froma scirrco (sp) and were told it would bolt straight up, any horrors we should expect?  Last but least any other modifications you could recommend?

the head will bolt on no probs, and while ur there u may as well chuck a gti can in the for a bit of extra grunt.
u could also swap the gti manifold and exhaust sysytem over too.

But the inlet manifold and other bits all bolt on okay?  Would the cam timing be the same?

I'm currently looking for a 1.8 head, should i be looking for a 1.8 mk3
 driver head and use a mk2 gti cam?  Or would the 1.8 gti 8v head fit as a straight swop, sorry for all the questions!

1.6/1.8 carb heads are identical, so no need to worry there.  If you want to fit a GTI head you'll gain a bit of power because it has larger ports, plus the cam is better.
A GTI head will fit straight on, the only issue is theres a coolant channel hole in the back of the head thats missing.  You can drill it out though, start small till you pop into the coolant channel, then work your way up till the hole is the same size as the one on the driver head

I Did this, the extra power is really noticable too, definatly worth doing, the coolant channel holes dead easy to do too, i thought ide have trouble working out where to drill but theres like an indent where it should be and the space round it for the gasket so its a peice of piss, youve got to time it up like a gti or something too i think, ages ago so i cant really remember

Yes you need to make a new mark on your flywheel to 6degrees BTDC rather than 18degs as per the original carb to make the most out of the new cam
