Advice on buying a VR6 please..
« on: 06 June 2007, 19:38 »
Hi all

wondering if somebody could help me out. Ive got a Golf GTI 2.0 8V and havent been impressed with the performace so for a while now ive been looking for either a gti 16v or a vr6 (ideally want a mk4 1.8t but would u belive me insurance company wont insure me on one!!) so Im looking for a decent VR6.

Though its seems hard to find one in good cond with low miles and a service history.

Ive found a 3dr highline with 73,000m but no service for £2500

How bad is it not having a service on a car like a vr6? i.e. should u totally avoid it???

Also how much would i be expecting to pay for a 3dr vr6 with under 100,000m and a service history???

anything else to look out for??

any advice appreciated!! thanks all

Silver

check the reg out with the local dealership if it has vag history they will hold a record.
check the reg is not recorded with hpi for total loss etc

condition is the main thing, rust around the wheel arches etc overspray panels,

has the car got old mot's

there are loads of highlines about atm,

having owned one as an upgrade from an 8v the big difference is fuel consumption it is high
considered a good spec 16v nearly as much pwer but lighter as only 2litre and better mpg

assuming its all clean but has no service... whats the case?

would consider a 16v mk3 3dr if i could find a decent one.

Thanks for ur advice though..

would u say the one i mentioned would be worth £2500 still??

robin, considering ive got all the information on my car, huge amounts of receipts and my project page, i cant actually see myself selling my car for a long time, if at all.. but, it was recorded totl loss but only on economical, which worries me a bit.. how do you remove or show that it has been repaired safely?

cat c or cat d?

you can no longer remove the cat rating from the dvla. cat c require a vic check now to go back on the rd.

a cat registared car will always be worth less to the general public as it has been involved in a claim.
although some claims now as so small ie dented wing etc and they write the car off as a cat c or a cat d seems silly.
even if you keep the car and the insurance has been notified and you dont make a claim if it has been inspected they can still notify the dvla and registar the car as cat c or catd.

Biggest problem is with insurance as if you make a claim and the car is allready recorded they will pay out next to nothing.

In the past we have bought cat c and cat d just to break for this reason now we just dont touch em.

Before we buy a car we hpi it to be 100% sure

Personally I prefer 5drs on the MK3 but my opion, tend to have been bought new as family cars and not had such a hard life in general in the early years which can make or break a car.

but a well kitted out 3dr 16v would be a car to have and over an 8V you will be grinning.

re value a car is worth what some one is willing to pay, if you really like the car and are happy with the checks you have made,  wave 2k under the sellers nose as cash talks

Cool, cheers boss

Mine needs a VIC then, think it was a c or d, it was definately no higher! They said £800 for the r repairs, I think they just didn't want the trouble when all it needed was a wing and bumper
