gearbox/clutch fitting

hi all, my friend has bought an 8v 1991 gti but it had no gearbox.but he now has a box and put a new clutch on it.he bolted it all back together but there is no feeling in the clutch pedal,its asif the clutch isnt pulling when the pedal is pressed.its all been lined up with the right tools and so on,so now were stuck,any ideas?

when you fitted the gearbox did you notice if the rod for pushing the clutch was in the gearbox. this rod goes in to and through the shaft that you see when the gearbox is out of the car :sad:

i know the rod you mean and yes it in the box its been checked but when he looked at it there was a section that was a bluey colour,asif it had heated up?at the minute he is thinking that the friction wants replacing,but i think different because that will only affect the actual movement of the car?
