1.8 8v GTI issues
« on: 02 June 2007, 20:36 »
Hey, just been to look at a 1990 GTI 3dr in red 107K on the clock, the woman wants 600 quid for it.

the body work is almost perfect except for 3 10p patches of rust.  Interior is also in very good condition.  She warns me that the head gasket is about to go tho and when i popped the bonnet i noticed that the oil filler cap was taped on but shes had a few new parts like alternator, water pump etc. its got a dtm exhaust and non standard gear nob so id assume she is a bit of a girl racer. its also had a new gearbox.

I recon that she would except £250 for it, just wanted to know how difficult it is to change the head gasket on them or how much it would cost to get it done, cheers for your help.

had an 8v a while back not too bad too change might be worth doing the oil seals as well as you will have the head off.

I hadn't removed a head, fitted new new big end bearings, camshafts, piston rings or subframes until a year ago...

I love it!!!

big learning curve though and it helps to have a mate with a garage that he doesn't mind letting me use!
