Oil Useage
« on: 27 May 2007, 16:27 »
Hello All

I need some advice on oil useage, i've done 3800 miles in 6 months in my GTI and in total have had to top up the oil by about a litre in that time.

I think i'm quite sensible driver, thrash it now and again (once / twice a week), but mainly stick to 'normal' driving, i do a lot of town driving, starting and stopping etc, which returns about 30mpg.

I maybe paranoid, due to having a 307 diesel previously, which wouldnt use a drop of oil, don't think i ever topped it between 12000 miles services!

Anybody else use much oil? or is it just normal?

Thanks

that sounds the same as mine, I put three quarters of a litre in after 3500 miles, at 6 months old and I hardly trash it either and do mainly town driving.

Excuse my ignorance, but the oil dipstick is showing the oil level at half way between min and max - should i top up the oil?  Done 3400 miles.  Also, the oil used in my car is not the long life stuff but the other stuff.  Read after in a forum that most people have specified the long life stuff regardless of how many miles they do.  Should I have specified the long life stuff and if so, can i still have it changed?

Thanks in advance.

0.5  litre in 3000 miles, nothing more since then (currently 4100 miles).

Stiggy - Reading should be to the top of the dipstick marker - top it up

Servicing regime can be specified with the dealer - should equate to your annual mileage, driving style and average journey type etc. Full details in the handbook.

Oil consumption can be upto one litre per 1,000 miles, so all are well within tollerance.

Regarding the variable interval LongLife servicing regime - don't do it.  The latest advice from VAG is that LongLife servicing is only suitable if you keep below 3,000 rpm.  Now I'm sure that all us GTI owners never keep below 3,000rpm - so you need to switch to the fixed interval Time and Distance servicing.

LongLife oils - these are a much higher specification compared to the normal time and distance oils, even if the T&D oils are fully synthetic.  Any turbo engine, even on T&D servicing, should still use the LongLife oil.
