Cutting out problem
« on: 30 May 2007, 21:04 »
Hey everyone. Im having a little problem with my '86 16v GTi. I went and started it this morning and the revs shot straight up then it idled ok for a few minutes then cut out, so I restarted it and again it idled for a couple of minutes and cut out.

Fearing it had no fuel I filled it up with a jerry can and it started again and so I took it for a quick drive round the block...no problem.

Ive come to try and start it again about half an hour ago and it started, ran for a couple of minutes and then died, now it just starts and cuts out.

Also when I'm turning it over, it turns over quick then seems to hit a bad spot and goes slower, then pops then turns over regular speed again.

I cant figure it out as this is my first VW. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,
Andy

Ive just started it then and managed to keep it running for about 30 seconds and it was misfiring like mad and popping. Does anyone have an idea what could be wrong with it?

Cheers,
Andy

sounds like a block in one of the injectors or may look at the rubber pipes off the inlet manifold they are the small ones they always tear and split really easy and that causes idleing problems

Its ok now. It turned out to be the distributor cap again. Each one I've put on seems to be slightly loose but the one ive just put on now is fine. I'll see how it bears up.

Cheers anyway mate,
