new dub

hi all,i jus got a new golf.its a g reg driver in white.with gti suspension exhasut and leather seats.its nice condition but its only a 1.6 but this doesnt bother me coz its going to turn into a 16v soon.i have a few questions that i wud like answering.
how would you set the carb up?its off a 1.8 version but dont think its a webber,its running very rich
also how easy is it to install a centeral locking and electric window kit?

depends what ya call easy if u got a bit of common sense and a brain its not too bad if u not too good with the spanners then get sum1 who is to help ya, its not rocket science and ya shud be able tackle it yaself pretty easily

The carb you have is obviously jetted for a 1.8, so you must be overfuelling. You may be able to tune this out but you may want to consider either fitting original equipment or rejetting the carb. If the engine passes the emission test, then live with it until you do your conversion.
As for the other questions regarding locks and windows, arm yourself with a haynes and find a decent donor vehicle with everything still in the vehicle. Then remove the whole lot in one, including required wiring looms. It takes a little patience and time though. Try to avoid obtaing the required equipment from different cars as you will miss something.

see my 2e2 faq, normally a 1.8 carb will work perfectly well on a 1.6!

kool cheers for the help.but ive just come accross a new problem.i have been given an engine,its the 8v gti with everything but the ecu and loom.how much work is it to convert the carb fed driver to the injected fuel system,with regards to wiring loom and such.also i probably wont but would i be able to use the 1.6 box on it?

Its not an easy task, you'll need all the engine loom, perhaps the fusebox & car loom as well if it doesnt have the same type of fusebox (pre-90 fusebox, hazard switch on dash, post-90 hazard on column) You'll need the fuel pumps & lines, zaust, driveshafts, gearbox etc.  Ideally you want to uprate the brakes, and fit the front anti roll bar, as well as the rear beam, arb & disc brakes.

You could just throw the carb injection bits on the GTI lump and basically have a 1.8 carb lump but with a better head & cam.  Problem is the GTI head doesnt have the coolant feed for the carb, so ideally you'll need a webber carb otherwise it will never run properly.  Other option is to fit the carb head on the 1.8 bottom, or take the GTI head off and drill the coolant channel.

At the end of the day the carby has to be pretty mint to justify the effort of building a car you could just go out and buy!
