Removing front strut nut
« on: 19 April 2007, 21:27 »
Does anyone know an easy way to do this or rather what tools work best and where I can get them?  As the nut is nested in a cup there isn't enough room to get a spanner in to undo the nut and I cant use a socket as need to use an alun key to hold the centre still!?!?!  Will a dog leg / ring spanner fit?  I spoke to the local dealer as the old haynes manual lists the VW tool number but the dealer says they cant sell tools accross the counter?  WTF is all that about??  Any advice would be appreciated as shock needs to be replaced.  TA

I just did this the other day using a 1/2" drive socket over the nut with an allen key through the middle of the socket. Used large mole grips to turn the socket. Guess i was lucky they werent too tight.
Not sure how i will torque them back up, i think GSF sell the special too for this

98743 STRUT NUT TOOL 2PC  GENERAL USE***  7.25
98744 STRUT NUT TOOL 3PC  GENERAL USE***  8.90

I bought the 98743 tool ages ago and it didn't fit my mk1 set-up, so I made a tool to do the job - as above using socket, large mole grips, and allen key, two people are required though to get the nut off without rounding it off... the tools are available if you research on the NET.

I have recently done this job on my mk2.

I used a spark plug socket that had flat sides on the top that a ring spanner fitted on, down the hole on the socket went the long end of the allen key. Over the short end of the allen key we put a tube.

It took two of us to do it and actually twisted the allen key as they were so tight, but we got there in the end!

Hope this helps!
