starter motor problem
« on: 08 April 2007, 21:22 »
My starter motor has started to play up,
sometimes it just clicks and all power goes, lights on dash dim and go out and there is a burning smell from starter motor area

other times it turns over very slowly, then goes to normal speed

Have pulled the motor apart all looks ok brushes are good  solanoid looks good not binding and no sign of burning.

only thing it might be is that it is a 1600cc starter motor turning a 2.0 2e engine

any ideas?

Hi
Is it a BOSCH starter.
If it is, can you put up any numbers that you can see on it.

Check your battery, starter & alternator wires, clean em up with sandpaper till shiny & refit.  Also check the starter motor bush hasn't fallen out of the gearbox casing, if this happens it sometimes wont mesh up with the flywheel square!

It may be as you say the 1.6 motor aint man enough, try a GTI one or if you want the best available get a diesel one :)
